SUNDAY WISDOM

The old Irish when immersing a babe at baptism left out the right arm so that it would remain pagan for good fighting.

Today is Dexter Augustus Coppola’s Catholic Baptism. Next week the Native American.

Are you leaving out a right arm? :)

I am sitting here with my bottle of grappa having a good cigar, feeling a little vulnerable (fumed out) as I ponder and try to answer this very important, rather loaded question.

Whether we like it or not, Catholicism shaped the western world, which I am most definitely a child of. My good friend Father Antonio of Christ the King church, performed a very warm, humanistic sacred baptism. I met him 10 years ago, when I was extremely depressed (not that that isn’t any different from what I go through occasionally now).

I went to that lovely church to light a candle, something I need to do from time to time. I heard a steaming noise coming from a back room. It was Father Antonio making an espresso. He told me to come over, have an espresso–it was good for the brain, because it had a lot of niacin. We had a couple shots, talked about all sorts of things, both sacred and profane, like men together–we became good friends.

Out of respect to my dear friend Father Antonio and for a deep respect for the sincerity and ultimate clarity of Jesus Christ, my family and I have always done a Catholic baptism from generation to generation; but I do keep both arms out of the Catholic bath to have both the common sense wisdom and the spiritual wisdom of other faiths respected as well. My wife and I leave it to Dexter to choose the path he wishes to follow. Next weekend, Dexter will have an equally important Shamanistic, Native American baptism as well.

One last note, Barney Childs, my mentor and a man I will always hold close to my brain and to my heart, was an atheist. He was a Rhodes Scholar in poetry and music. His teachings shaped much of my thought. One night we went to a poetry reading together. A Catholic priest got up to recite an original poem about the invisible state of things. Barney started to cry (not something you’d expect from Barney), I asked him what was wrong. He told me he never heard a poem resonate with such sincerity, eloquence and utter simplicity that stemmed from something so complicated. It left a deep impression on me.

    Need I say more.

I grapple with the images, and find your thinking to be on a path to an open state of conscisness for yourself, and your sons, and family, it’s all good. My daughters are being raised in their mothers faith. Mormonism. I was raised a presybterian.

Myself? I think you nailed me pretty good with being an existentialist. With all the bad, there is good. You have a good life Christopher.

I guess it true about an artist and a troubled soul.
Sometimes I’m taken wrong in the things I write.

When you hold Dexter up to Tunkas’ila, remember to ask The Grandfather Creator to keep all of your relations (Mitakuye Oyasin) in his graces, and take pitty on you. (Unc’i my yi yelo)
I am glad you are doing these things CRC. Not long ago, I too was an agnostic. Now I say Mitakuye Oyasin. And this includes you and your family in all my prayers. And by the by. I’m Irish.
    Be well,
HEY YANKEE! That goes for you too.

I am feeling much joy as I read your post and those well written responses. They reflect much heart, it is our heart’s that is connected to what is sacred. I can go on and on, but I won’t. I am not qualified to teach or preach. Plus, I don’t want to tire any soul. Before I express my hearty wishes, I will put it this way: Baptism goes beyond custom. And so…

Congratulations on Dexter Augustus Coppola’s Baptism. May the Almighty bless him and guide him now and forever!

Cali, please continue to hang in. You’re a dear soul. I think you know my thoughts so I am not going to repeat, for fear of sounding like a broken record.

CRC, I believe that I Am became a healing experience for both of us. I heard your heart, you heard mine. While I consider you a Godsend. I can never give enough thanks. So, thanks once again. I send much heart to you, your family and friends.

Brodda Barn, thanks for being true as you share your heart with all of us. All For One, One For All. The 3 Musketeers mantra has become taken as our own as we ALL express much heart, respect and loyalty.

All For One, One For ALL

I would like to hear the poem, “The Invisible State of Things”….

  7. Catherine Says:

I would too. Any info on that poem? Congratulations to you and your family.
