Great post CRC. I love Scott Joplin. I am always amazed at how his melodies can be played at any tempo with maximum effect. Much of his sheet music indicates this. He was the king of syncopation and it’s cool that you and that good fellow are listening to his stuff in and outside a van somewhere in the middle of nowhere.
CRC, I don’t know if you remember this short piece I did for OTL about “Hollywoods Barber to the Past”? I linked it to my name. His Barber shop is near the corner of Spring and Bellflower, north of the Worthington Ford dealership. “I’ll eat a bug ” Cal Worthington and the now defunct Los Altos Drive inn.
This barber is where I used to get my haircut when I lived in Long Beach. He’s into jazz and the music I used for my piece is Jackie Gleeson’s band, which I never realized Jackie Gleeson was a musician. I always figured pool player comedien and drinker.
Anyway, life is good with those that live their way.
I love the movie, “The Sting” with the old time piano music. I like the idea of traveling on a horse with you leather bag full of dried deer meat, trinkets and bartering with people and going into the unknown territories. Sometimes that sounds so exciting instead of the fast food places of now a days.
I’ve never sported a leather bag full of dried deer meat, but I certainly agree with you Anna. It’s about first principles…roots…origins. I try not to forget all that is “old school”. Actually it’s not old school it’s just common sense. If old time piano music really touches your soul and resonates with you then who cares about all the infinite possible things that don’t. The movie Rocky and The Godfather all fit in to this category as well. The short film “I Am” is another great work of art. A great poem written by “The Barn”…too many quotation marks??lol….It’s that feeling…that great great story told so well. All of that is certainly something that I can relate to.
